Superbowl Champion and 4x MVP Aaron Rodgers is in the midst of choosing his next team. But it doesn’t seem like any team has favored odds to land the qb. Let’s evaluate some of Rodgers’s options and predict where he might land.
In 2023 a blockbuster trade sent legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Packers to the Jets in exchange for a handful of picks. Rodgers had spent 18 seasons with the Packers (15 as QB1). In that time he won four MVPs, appeared in six NFC Championship games, and helped Green Bay win Super Bowl XLV. In 2 seasons with the Jets, Rodgers spent one year on injured reserve with an achilles injury and led the Jets to a disheartening 5-12 record in 2024.
The dumpster fire organization – that is the New York Jets, are looking to make big changes in the Meadowlands. They have hired former Lions Defensive Coordinator, Aaron Glenn to take over at head coach. However, the bigger change comes from releasing Aaron Rodgers and his longtime connection, WR Davante Adams (Adams recently signed with LAR). With many teams in the running for the veteran QB, and no indication destination in sight – here are the teams most likely to field Aaron Rodgers next fall:
Pittsburgh Steelers
Since the departure of “Big” Ben Roethlisberger in 2022, a carousel of NFL quarterbacks have lined up under center for the ‘Steel City.’ The Steelers need a franchise quarterback, but sitting at 21st overall in the draft leaves them out of the running for this year’s top QB prospects. Rodgers would make a lot of sense for the Steelers’ upgraded receiving corps. With George Pickens and DK Metcalf out wide, Rodgers will have plenty of opportunities to prove he’s still an MVP caliber quarterback. A downside for Rodgers on the Steelers, is their play caller, Arthur Smith, who ran an underwhelming pass offensive last year and tends to prioritize run plays. Still, this team gives the 41 year old passer the best shot at winning, and are my frontrunners to land him, at the moment.
New York Giants
We’ve previously discussed the New York Giants desperate need for a QB on OnlyFootball. For this reason, they are a big player in the ‘A-Rod’ sweepstakes. They currently sit at third overall in the draft and many expect them to take Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders with that pick (click here for our prediction of the top 5 picks in the NFL Draft). That doesn’t rule them out of taking a veteran like Rodgers to play for a season before having a potential young quarterback take over. Although, Aaron Rodgers is not the type to mentor younger competition or give up his starting spot for the betterment of the team. Jordan Love sat behind Rodgers for three years for that very reason. The Giants have also shown interest in veteran free agent QB Russell Wilson. Aaron Rodgers put out a statement saying he is in “no rush” to make a decision and some believe he could make a choice as late as June. The Giants are not in a position to wait around for their next quarterback, which allows a link to Russell Wilson make more sense. If things go sideways for the G-men in the draft then there is a better chance of Rodgers staying in MetLife.
Minnesota Vikings
Earlier this week a report suggested that the Vikings were OUT on Aaron Rodgers and would place trust in 2nd year passer JJ McCarthy. However, if Pittsburgh and NYG go in different directions for their quarterback the Vikings could jump back in the mix. And let’s be honest, we all want to see Aaron Rodgers follow the Brett Favre lineage of Green Bay – NYJ – Minnesota (for the memes of course). I don’t see how acquiring Rodgers makes sense for the Vikings They’ve already invested in McCarthy, who missed his rookie season with a knee injury. Bringing Rodgers in will not help to develop the former Michigan National Champion. The key thing for Minnesota this off-season, is to build around JJ McCarthy (which they’ve been phenomenal at already).
NO Team
There’s a real possibility that Aaron Rodgers may not find a suitor for next season. His strict demands and lack of urgency to be on a team may leave A-Rod behind the rest of the players competing for these open QB spots. There is a scenario where Wilson stays with the Steelers, the Giants draft a QB, and the Vikings ride with McCarthy which leaves Rodgers in the dust. I’m sure other teams would show interest but Aaron Rodgers has made it known he wants to win and he wants to be surrounded by talent. Other teams that would jump in the pool with him aren’t set up to win. Regardless of where he ends up, it will be interesting to see if Aaron Rodgers can return to his level of MVP caliber play during his tenure in Green Bay or if he leaves a similar impact that he did on the New York Jets over the past two seasons.
